Other WIPs

Since I re-read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I've been working on and off on making a couple pages into a comic book page.

A rough sketch of one of the early pages in my Daimion story.

A rough sketch of Daimion and Anna to be finished at a later date.

Another digital sketch. I finished Fenikkusu (the character in the lower left corner), but the others will be finished when I have the time.

All characters in the lower three drawings are © to me.

A couple influences

A lot of things have influenced my art.

Two of the biggest influences over my work are Kubo Tite and Takeuchi Naoko, the authors (respectively) of the manga series Bleach and Sailor Moon.

Bleach works:

These three pages are from a full color chapter of Bleach (chapter 162). It's a pen and ink image colored with Copic markers. These pages have been cleaned and translated from the original Japanese by fans.

Even though Kubo doesn't get much of a chance to use color in his work, he uses it very well to accentuate the panels when he gets the chance. Bleach, like most manga, is primarily black and white with an occasional color spread in a weekly magazine, in this case, Weekly Shonen Jump.

...Unfortunately due to image size constraints, I have you ask you to follow this link to view my page montage...

I picked out nine pages from fairly recent chapters (all of these images were originally published in 2007) to show Kubo's sense of framing, action, posing/perspective, and jokes where needed.

All images shown where originally cleaned and translated by the scanlation group Maximum7 (http://www.maximum7.net)

Takeuchi Naoko is one of the other biggest influences on my drawing style, mainly because Sailor Moon was the first manga I ever read, so it made a really strong impression on me.

Unfortunately finding high quality black and white images of the Sailor Moon manga is very difficult, because it is out of print in America and the original binding on the manga is too shoddy to risk scanning without breaking it entirely. However, there are still lots of websites out there sharing some of the beautiful color images Takeuchi has produced for Sailor Moon.

These are all pen and ink drawings, colored with colored inks.

Originally used as a poster image.

The five original Sailor Soldiers, this image was used for the cover of volume 4.

Serenity and Endymion

Super Sailor Moon and Super Sailor Chibi-Moon going into their final battle at the end of the 3rd story arc -- Sailor Moon S.

The last influence I'm going to show (for now, anyway) actually isn't a manga artist, and is actually the impressionist Mary Cassatt. I love looking at her work and making an attempt to integrate it into my realistic work.

Portrait of a Little Girl, painted in 1878, Cassatt's first definitively Impressionist painting.

The Boating Party (1894)

One of Cassatt's later paintings after her experiments with Japanese prints.

Reading le Figaro (1878)

I just really like the way Cassatt used colors and her paint. I also really admire her ambition and the fact that not only was she one of the only female Impressionists, but was also a successful artist.

Those are the three biggest influences on anything I do right now.

Works in progress...

A work in progress -- a flashback scene of Daimion as a little boy meeting Titania for the first time.

The original sketch for Titania and Daimion.

I'm just posting this to give a general idea of how I work when I'm inking and coloring digitally. I'll probably update this post with more WIPs and the finished piece.

Well...

Okay. Well. I think that I'll just start this with silly things that I drew for...well...no reason at all.

A color character sheet for the three primary characters in a series I started about...four years ago.

A drawing I did as a thanks for my Deviant Art page getting 10,000 pageviews. I drew my anime-self (which inexplicably has fox ears and a fox tail -- I don't know why), and 10 characters from various series who were the main reason why I got 10,000 pageviews.

characters featured:

top left: Haruno Sakura, Uzumaki Naruto (from Naruto © Kishimoto Masashi)

top right: Kinomoto Sakura, Li Syaoran (from Cardcaptor Sakura, © CLAMP)

middle: Inoue Orihime, Ulquiorra, Grimmjow, Kurosaki Ichigo (from Bleach, © Kubo Tite)

bottom: Kusajishi Yachiru, Kuchiki Rukia (from Bleach, © Kubo Tite)

And I guess I'll finish this with a pen and ink drawing of Selene and Helios from Greek mythology. The background is done in watercolor. I masked them out and painted the background. I'm pretty happy with the results.
